At Community Memorial Cancer Center in Ventura, our gynecologic oncology team combines advanced surgical expertise with individualized, compassionate care so that you feel informed, supported, and confident in your treatment from the very first appointment.

Gynecologic oncology is the specialty dedicated to diagnosing and treating cancers of the female reproductive system. Our surgeons are highly experienced in minimally invasive and robotic-assisted procedures, and are early adopters of the da Vinci® robotic surgery system - bringing nationally recognized surgical precision to patients right here in Ventura County.

Gynecologic Cancers We Treat

  • Ovarian cancer: including epithelial, germ cell, and stromal tumors
  • Endometrial (uterine) cancer: the most common gynecologic cancer, affecting the lining of the uterus
  • Cervical cancer: often detected through routine Pap smears and HPV testing
  • Vulvar cancer: cancer of the external female genitalia
  • Vaginal cancer: a rare cancer of the vaginal wall
  • Fallopian tube cancer: often treated similarly to ovarian cancer
  • Gestational Trophoblastic Neoplasms: a group of rare tumors that develop from cells that would normally form the placenta during pregnancy
  • Precancerous gynecologic conditions: including cervical dysplasia and endometrial hyperplasia, which can be treated before cancer develops

Gynecologic Oncology Treatments We Offer

  • Robotic-assisted surgery with the da Vinci® system - our surgeons use the da Vinci® platform to perform complex pelvic procedures with exceptional precision, smaller incisions, less pain, and faster recovery compared to traditional open surgery
  • Minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery - for appropriate candidates, laparoscopic techniques reduce surgical trauma and shorten hospital stays
  • Complex open pelvic surgery - for advanced cases requiring extensive surgical intervention, our team has deep expertise in complex pelvic and cytoreductive procedures
  • Chemotherapy coordination - when systemic treatment is needed, we work closely with our medical oncology team to integrate chemotherapy seamlessly into your overall care plan
  • Hormonal therapy - used for certain hormone-sensitive gynecologic cancers, such as some endometrial cancers
  • Radiation therapy coordination - when radiation is part of your treatment, we coordinate directly with radiation oncology to ensure a seamless, well-sequenced plan

GYNECOLOGIC CANCER FAQS

When should I see a gynecologic oncologist?

You may be referred to a gynecologic oncologist after an abnormal biopsy, imaging study, Pap test, or diagnosis of a gynecologic cancer or precancerous condition. Early evaluation can help ensure the most effective treatment plan.

Will I need chemotherapy or radiation therapy?

Treatment recommendations vary based on the type and stage of cancer. Your gynecologic oncologist will work closely with medical and radiation oncologists to determine whether additional therapies are needed.

Can precancerous gynecologic conditions be treated before they become cancer?

Yes. Conditions such as cervical dysplasia and endometrial hyperplasia can often be treated before cancer develops. Early detection and treatment are important for preventing progression.
