About Ventura County

Ventura County’s name is a shortened version of San Buenaventura, California’s ninth mission, founded in 1782. The fact that Buenaventura means good fortune in Spanish should come as no surprise to anyone lucky enough to live in this very special part of California.

Ventura County is blessed with a Mediterranean climate — summers are cool and dry at the coast and warmer as you head inland. Winters are mild and nearly all the rain falls between October and April. With vast beaches to the West, scenic mountains to the East, and an abundance of biking, running, and hiking trails, Ventura County is a haven for sun worshippers and sports enthusiasts. Conditions for surfing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing are good year-round. There are public, municipal, and private golf courses across the county. Sailors can cruise to the rugged Channel Islands or sail up to beautiful Santa Barbara. If a relaxing day at the beach is more your speed, there are a wealth of sandy beaches to choose from, and the water is warm enough for swimming.
