As an independent nonprofit healthcare system, Community Memorial exists to serve local patients, families, caregivers, and future generations — not corporate interests, government entities, or shareholders. Every dollar we earn is reinvested into our ability to provide care, whether through advanced technologies, modern facilities, or exceptional talent.

"Our nonprofit status allows us to focus our service on the community rather than thinking about returns to owners or shareholders," explains Bill Kearney, board of trustees chair and donor. "Thus, any surplus revenue that we might be fortunate to generate is invested back into the community."

The power of nonprofit healthcare is that resources stay local, decisions remain community-focused, and every investment helps ensure exceptional care remains available close to home for years to come.

Care Shaped by Community Needs

We don't guess what our neighbors need; we ask them. Every three years, Community Memorial conducts a formal Community Health Needs Assessment to identify gaps in local care, allowing us to allocate resources where they offer the greatest public benefit.

Over the years, we’ve made significant investments to enhance care in the community. This includes opening a state-of-the-art, 75-bed skilled nursing facility in Ojai to support patients with short-term rehabilitation needs and residents who require long-term care. We also prioritize maintaining the latest advancements in surgical technology, imaging, and patient records management. And thanks to the philanthropic support of our community, we continue to grow and adapt in these uncertain times.

Our nonprofit status means we also have the flexibility to fund vital community programs that target specific, chronic health challenges in our community. Examples include:

• Innovative Behavioral Health Programs & Services 
• Diabetes Self-Management Education and Training
• Substance Abuse Treatment and Partnerships to fight addiction
• Community Memorial Graduate Medical Education Street Medicine program, which provides healthcare, food, and clothing directly to the unhoused and underserved populations in Ventura

For our medical staff, working within a nonprofit framework positively impacts the ongoing care environment. Our physicians and advanced practice providers are involved in strategic leadership decisions, working hand-in-hand with health system administration rather than answering to strict financial metrics.

"It gives you the freedom to practice medicine the way that you really want to and in the best interest of the patient," says Dr. Neil Canby, an emergency room physician who has been with Community Memorial for 22 years. "We want to be financially responsible, but we're not answering to a bottom line. We're held to a standard of providing the best care possible."

A Local Experience, A Personal Touch

When a healthcare system is rooted in the community, the care feels personal. For patient Amy Yamamoto, a recent outpatient procedure reminded her of how unique the hospital’s culture truly is.

"I was surrounded by people who truly felt like my extended local network," Amy shares. "The culture positively impacted my care. You saw it from my check-in to my outpatient care, and even to the point of a personal card sent to me a week after I left."

Amy notes that having lived in major cities like Los Angeles, Austin, and Honolulu, the warm, approachable emphasis and diligence at Community Memorial stands out as exceptional, high-quality care, right in her neighborhood.
