Improving Cancer Care: A New Era at the Community Memorial Cancer Center

In Ventura County, approximately 13% of Medicare beneficiaries are living with cancer—a statistic that highlights a significant health burden within our local community. To meet this challenge, Community Memorial Healthcare has opened its expanded Community Memorial Cancer Center, bringing advanced, patient-centered treatments to residents right here in Ventura.

Addressing the Gaps: Why Expansion Matters

For many patients, the time between a cancer diagnosis and the start of treatment can be filled with anxiety and logistical hurdles. Nationwide, that gap often averages six weeks. One of the primary goals of the expanded center is to improve local access and reduce that waiting period.

"Many patients currently travel outside of the area for specialty care and clinical trials," says Community Memorial’s Medical Oncologist, Dr. Karlos Oregel. "We wanted to change that. Community Memorial expanded their services to keep everything under one roof, providing the same level of care found at major academic centers, but close to home."

The New Infusion Center: Designed for Healing

A key component of the expansion is the new Infusion Center, a space specifically designed to evoke warmth and reduce the stress of treatment. Community Memorial Cancer Center Director, Tracie Funk, says the vision was to create an environment of "comfort, dignity, and emotional wellbeing."

Key features of the new space include:

  • Natural Light An abundance of windows to support patient wellbeing.
  • Calm Aesthetics A color palette chosen to foster healing and tranquility.
  • Patient Comfort Infusion chairs equipped with iPad arms and charging ports to help pass the time during long treatments.
  • Advanced Technology State-of-the-art infusion pumps and integrated electronic systems ensure that every dose is delivered with maximum precision and safety.

Comprehensive Care Under One Roof

The Community Memorial Cancer Center is also a hub for cancer resources and access to a collaborative team of specialists, including:

  • Local Expertise An experienced team of hematology and medical oncologists, alongside specially-trained nurses and support staff.
  • Multidisciplinary Team Approach Every complex patient case is reviewed weekly at our Tumor Board by a team of specialists including surgical, medical, and radiation oncologists, ensuring all best treatment options are considered.
  • Dedicated Patient Support We offer robust resources to help patients and families navigate their journey, including Cancer Nurse Navigators, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, and a variety of support groups, education resources, and survivorship programs — all for free through our Cancer Resource Center.

The Power of Continuity

One of the greatest benefits of receiving care at Community Memorial is continuity. Because the Cancer Center is located right next to Community Memorial Hospital – Ventura, your care team is never far away.

"The oncologist managing you on a day-to-day basis can also follow you if you happen to be hospitalized," says Dr. Oregel.

This seamless connection is powered by an integrated electronic health record, allowing every doctor involved in your care to see the same information in real-time. Patients can also track their own progress, labs, and appointments through the MyChart app.
