W. Lee Wan, MD

About

Dr. W. Lee Wan is a board-certified ophthalmologist with over 30 years of experience, and is the President and Medical Director of Coastal Eye Specialists, the practice started by his father in 1964. Specializing in advanced cataract and lens implant surgery, Dr. Wan has provided an exceptional medical and surgical eye care to patients at Coastal Eye since 1988. He holds an appointment as a Clinical Instructor of Ophthalmology at the University of Southern California School of Medicine.

Dr. Wan graduated with his medical degree from Loma Linda University School of Medicine, where he was the recipient of the Hoxie Award for excellence as a medical student. He then completed an internal medicine internship at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, before focusing his training on ophthalmology. Dr. Wan completed a research fellowship in cataract and refractive surgery and his residency in ophthalmology at the prestigious Doheny Eye Institute at the University of Southern California, where he was awarded the Nesburn Award for research as a resident.

In addition to his extensive training and practice experience, Dr. Wan also remains active within the medical community as a member of many professional organizations, including:

​Dr. Wan holds appointments on the Medical Staffs of Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura, St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard and Channel Islands Surgicenter, as well as the teaching staff of Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center.

He has been the recipient of many honors, including inclusion in the Best Doctors in America list every year since 1996 (selected by his fellow physicians). He has also been awarded Catherine McAuley Lifetime Achievement Award by St. John’s Hospitals, the Spirit of Philanthropy Award by St. John’s Healthcare Foundation, and the Values in Action award by Catholic Healthcare West. In addition, he has held many elected and appointed leadership positions in the medical community, including President of the Medical Staff at St. John’s Regional Medical Center and St. John’s Pleasant Valley Hospitals, a member of the hospitals’ Community Board, and the medical staff representative to the California Medical Association. He has served on the Board of Governors of the Ventura County Medical Association and the California Association of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, is Executive Vice President of the Ventura County Ophthalmology Society, and is a Past President of the Ventura County Medical Association.

In addition to his busy practice and leadership activities, Dr. Wan has also found time for medical missionary work under the auspices of Surgical Eye Expeditions, including surgical expeditions to Vietnam, as well as training local eye surgeons at the Imperial City Eye Meeting in Hue, Vietnam, and at Childrens Surgical Centre in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Dr. Wan’s work has appeared in numerous publications and scientific presentations discussing advances in cataract and refractive surgery, as well as other emerging ophthalmology treatments.

In his free time, Dr. Wan loves family time, is passionate about snow skiing and tennis, and has a wide range of musical tastes reflected in his operating room playlist.
