Primary Care
EDUCATIONAL GOALS & OBJECTIVES
Our Primary Care Pathway offers robust clinical training to residents interested
in a career as a primary care physician. The pathway is designed to:
- Provide additional mentorship and coaching
- Allow the resident to have increased flexibility in scheduling so that
they can tailor their education to prepare for their future career
- Offer supplementary education in billing and coding in the outpatient setting
- Increase exposure to specialty care in the outpatient setting
Residents interested in completing the Primary Care Pathway must elect
to do so by the end of intern year. Residents who successfully complete
this pathway will receive special recognition and a certificate at graduation.
In addition to the
Ambulatory Medicine curriculum, residents in the pathway will:
- Meet regularly with an assigned mentor with long term experience as a primary
care physician to provide guidance. The mentor will seek to understand
the resident’s future career goals and help tailor their schedule
during ambulatory weeks and the primary care elective to ensure the resident
receives strong training and varied clinical experiences to prepare them
for a career in primary care.
- Complete a 4-week long primary care elective, which takes the place of
one inpatient medicine rotation. During this rotation, residents will
have daily continuity clinic to reinforce patient continuity as well as
gain a sense of the daily experience of a career in primary care. The
resident will also spend time in subspecialty clinics, which the resident
and mentor will select to match the resident’s clinical interests.
Past residents in the pathway have opted to spend additional time in specialties
such as urogynecology, sports medicine, addiction medicine, dermatology,
psychiatry, and wound clinic.
- Complete an outpatient billing and coding course during protected time
on the ambulatory week PGY3 schedule. GME will cover the cost of the course.
- With the support of the CMH Quality Department and/or our GME Research
team, develop and implement a longitudinal quality improvement project
focused on outpatient innovation.
