The PGY3 resident completes a one-month rotation to support increased knowledge, exposure, and breadth in surgical critical care cases, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the assessment and treatment of burn patients.
Faculty will facilitate learning in the 6 core competencies as follows:
I. Assess the burn wound's appearance with regard to its depth, microbial status, potential for healing, and need for intervention.
II. Conduct burn wound debridement and prepare it for skin grafting.
III. Perform the surgical treatment of post-burn contractures
IV. Participate in the acute resuscitation and care of the burned patient.
I. Discuss the techniques of resuscitation of major burns.
II. Describe the pathology and management of thermal, chemical, and electrical injury and inhalation injury and relationship to mortality, morbidity, and course of patient recovery.
III. Outline the principles of burn shock, immunologic alteration, and bacteriologic pathology of the burn wound.
IV. Discuss the epidemiology, prevention, and socioeconomic and psychological impact of burns.
V. List the physiological responses to thermal, chemical, and electrical burn injuries
I. Utilizes information technology to prepare for surgical procedures, bringing current modalities of care and the scientific evidence supporting them to the operating room.
II. Regularly assesses the efficacy of own practices in caring for burn patients.
III. Enhances personal practices in burn patient care by integrating well-collected data and feedback.
I. Educates patients and families in post-operative and rehabilitative strategies for burn patients.
